28 Wildlife
Wildlife
If the traveller holds a love of wildlife, visiting Canada offers many exciting opportunities — exploring and witnessing the abundance of wildlife inhabiting all parts of the country. Sables, wolves, coyotes, foxes, grizzly bears, black bears and skunks remain common throughout much of the Canadian lower and mid-latitudes. Polar bears and arctic foxes — renowned for their white colour — cover much of the arctic regions. Rocky mountain goats and big horned sheep frequent the lower bases of the Rockies. The dense forests
of British Columbia give homes to cougars, panthers, eagles and bears. If travellers are planning a trip into the wild, it is recommended that they be well-informed on the precautions to follow for avoiding possibly dangerous and sometimes fatal situations.
TTThe Timber Wolf
Also known as the grey wolf, their colour ranges from white to black, and often grey, but sometimes reddish in hue or brown. Small packs of these wolves still range through isolated regions of the
boreal forest.
TTThe Loon
The loon’s haunting call has made it a symbol of Canadian wilderness and can be found throughout most parts of Canada. This water bird is featured on the Canadian 1$ coin, referred to as a ‘Loonie.’
TThe Polar Bear
Polar bears hold the title as the largest carnivorous land animal in the world and weigh from 204 to 590 kilograms (450–1,300 lbs)
This white-coloured bear prefers his time alone, and enjoys tasty meals comprised of seals, belugas, whales,
rodents and walruses.
