he Black Bear
Found throughout North America, the black bear counts as the smallest, yet most common species of bear. heir usual slow movements and cuddly looks counter the reality that they can be swift and treacherous.
he Elk
After moose, the elk is the second-largest deer, and, unlike
moose, elk live in herds. Only male elk develop antlers which start
growing each spring and are shed the next winter, after mating season. Elk bulls
are 40% larger than cows on average.
he Pronghorn
Though sometimes called pronghorn antelope, these beautiful creatures are not related to Old World antelope. Pronghorn are relatively small, standing only about 3 feet high at the shoulders. hey weigh 90-150 pounds full grown. heir forward-pointing horn tines give them
their name.
he Eagle
Bald (white-crowned) eagles take 3-5 years to gain their distinctive piebald look. Young bald eagles look much like
golden eagles, but possess larger beaks and a more protruding head. Both types
range throughout much of wilderness North America, though the bald eagle
requires a body of water for ishing.
